How can someone be so void of feelings and morality, and more importantly, how can someone like that be voted by millions of people to rule a country? Ali Abbasi explores all these facets in a highly stylistic and captivating portrait of a man who had it all and yearns for more.
The movie never feels dead, it always moves forward
The Apprentice follows Donald Trump in a specific era of his career, from the beginning to the madness that led to his huge successes in the 90s and especially his relationship with his lawyer, Roy Cohn. First of all, I have to say that this movie is BEAUTIFUL, it has style, the vintage grainy feel of the 80s/90s is replicated in such a beautiful way that it makes every frame full of details and colors that pop. The feel of the era was definitely done with care, and the music too with some great well-chosen tracks accompanying the scenes.
Comparisons to movies like Wall Street etc
are super obvious, but Ali manages to make it his own. It’s a portrait that is anything but glamorous and very anxiety-inducing because it’s truly appalling how someone can be like that. The acting is phenomenal and supreme, especially Sebastian Stan who gives a terrifying performance – this is truly the Trump we’ve seen on TV.
Go see it!
If there’s one negative thing I can think of from this film it’s that it perhaps doesn’t explore many of the relationships in the film in a deeper way. Some of the characters in the film feel a bit isolated from the narrative, but this doesn’t take away from how great the film is.
