Perry was so impressed that he even helped develop the remix

Tale

In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. In their search for answers, the kids uncover a series of extraordinary mysteries. Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey, said that the Stranger Things season 4 remix of Journey’s 1980s hit « Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) » was done almost exactly as he had originally intended to do it in the 1980s, but lacked the technology. Throughout several episodes, people are seen ‘interrupting’ someone on a two-way radio or CB – that is, one person is talking/transmitting and the other person is transmitting to interrupt, and then the other person hears the interruption and stops transmitting. This has been done several times on children’s CB radios and on radios used by police.

Eleven: Friends Don’t Lie

These radios – CB and police radios from the era of the show – do not work that way. If you are broadcasting and someone else is broadcasting, you will not hear them.. The Stranger Things opening titles and fonts mimic the film grain and look of the 1980s TV series’ opening credits. A major factor in why I loved their movies and books was that many of them featured kids around my age so prominently

Michael Stein. There were two dominant forces in the 1980s that have had a lasting impact on my taste in film and also resulted in my undying love of fantasy, science fiction, and horror stories: Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say « The Two Steves »; they have arguably influenced and shaped the imaginations—the dreams AND the nightmares—of an entire generation. King wrote ‘Firestarter’, ‘It’ and ‘Stand By Me’, and Spielberg either directed or produced (through his Amblin company) ‘E.T.’, ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Gremlins’. They were stories in which young protagonists encountered aliens and monsters or had supernatural powers themselves – or just went on an adventure (to find a body or a long-lost treasure) with adults who were mostly out.

And that’s not a rip-off, it’s a love letter

If you’ve seen ‘Stranger Things’ by now, this should sound pretty familiar, right? Of course it does: because ‘Stranger Things’; deliberately pays homage to all those stories – and does it very, very well. The show mimics themes and a certain style from those 1980s treasures, and while it’s (for me) a very welcome callback to some of my favorite stories from my youth, it’s also very much its own. I won’t give away the plot here (I think you have a pretty good idea of what it’s about from what I wrote above), but I will mention that it’s beautifully shot, the effects and overall production values are top-notch, and the period-inspired music is fantastic. The biggest shout-out, though, has to go to the ensemble cast, especially the kids who play the protagonists: their charming performances are key to why the show works as well as it does.

To sum it all up: If you’re an octogenarian like me, this show is a must-see

For everyone else, it might depend a little more on whether you’re a fan of the genre or not, but if you like supernatural stories, ‘Stranger Things’ is a treat. I’d rate it eight stars out of ten, but with an extra star for nostalgia, this is a 9.
