What We Do In The Shadows was released in 2014

Co-written and directed by Jermaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (The Boy, The Wild Man, The Eagle). vs Shark, Jojo Rabbit) was amazing: with wonderfully understated humor, sharp dialogue, and clever plotting, it was weirdly funny and smart without being silly or even trying too hard. The film was set and filmed in Wellington, New Zealand and captured.

I needn’t have worried

the folksy understated humor that is a New Zealand trademark. When I found out that the show was set in the US, I questioned whether it would live up to the film, as I thought it had been hijacked by US producers and writers. Clement and Waititi are executive producers and head writers, so while the setting has changed, the film’s creative geniuses are also behind the series.

The show also has a long-term story arc, which makes it even more interesting

The series largely captures the same quirky, understated humor of the film, but with different characters and actors, and the new players are no slouch. It doesn’t feel quite the same as the film: the film felt more open (like it was shot by a documentary crew), giving it a bit of an edge, but there’s little to choose between the two. Five seasons have passed and the series is as good as ever, showing that the writers have not run out of ideas.
